How do I apply to the graduate program?
Go to: http://gradstudy.rutgers.edu and complete an on line application. We require three letters of recommendation, a personal statement, transcripts (unofficial OK for applications), GRE General Test and TOEFL or IELTS scores.

What is the cutoff date for applications?
The deadline to apply is January 15.

Do you admit students in the Fall and Spring?
We only have Fall admission.

Is it a full time program?
We are a full time program with no weekend or summer classes.

Do you offer financial aid?
Yes, we offer fellowships on the basis of academic merit to entering students. All applicants are automatically considered for these fellowships. Students in their second year and above may be awarded teaching assistantships, even if they did not receive fellowships when they entered.

How much math preparation is necessary?
Students must have training in calculus through multivariate calculus, a semester of linear algebra, and a semester of statistics. Additional math preparation, especially real analysis, is highly recommended. If your math preparation may not be clear from your transcript, you might upload a brief supplement with your application that explains the content of the math courses you’ve taken.

Who is required to submit TOEFL/IELTS test scores?
A TOEFL or IELTS score is required of non-native speakers of English. You are exempt from submitting TOEFL or IELTS scores if you are a Permanent Resident, US citizen, or an international applicant with a minimum of three years undergraduate studies or a masters degree with the mode of instruction being English.

What are the minimum scores for the TOEFL/IELTS?
For admission, students must receive the following scores or better on the IBT TOEFL: Writing, 22; Speaking, 23; Reading, 21; and Listening, 17. An IELTS score in bandwidth 7 is acceptable.

Are there minimum GRE scores?
We examine GRE scores within the context of a student’s entire application and do not impose a formal minimum on GRE scores for either admission or fellowships. However, we do consider GRE scores (especially on the quantitative GRE) to predict success in the program. Almost all admitted applicants have quantitative GRE scores in the top two deciles and many have very top scores.

Will you assess my likelihood of admission or financial aid if I send you my credentials?
No, you must submit a formal application through http://gradstudy.rutgers.edu for us to review your file. We look forward to learning about your interests and studies then.

Should I find a research advisor from the faculty now?
Students need not identify the faculty member who will serve as their research advisor until after they join the program.

Does the Department require an official transcript?
An unofficial transcript is acceptable when applying for admission. If you receive an offer of admission and decide to enroll, you must then send your official transcript to the Admissions office.

Where should I mail my official transcript and other application materials?
Except for official transcripts, all application materials should be uploaded to the online application site, not sent by mail. Official transcripts should be sent to the Admissions office (not the Department of Economics). Here is the address:
